The
Swing Set in General
Swing sets are generally thought to be a
piece of equipment used for children's enjoyment on a playground. They
consist of a hanging seat in which children may sit and swing back and
forth. But swing sets are not only for children. There are some types
that can be used by adults on a front porch and there are other types of
swings that are used by acrobats in a circus.
For playground use, swings are normally suspended from a metal or wooden
frame and may contain several swings lined up horizontally. This allows
more than one child to swing at a time.
There are different shapes and sizes of swings. Some are intended for
infants or toddlers that have seats with leg holes at the bottom which
can support the child while sitting upright. A parent can gently push
the swing as it sways back and forth.
Swings designed for older children are often made of canvas seats. They
can also be made of rubberized tire tread, wood or plastic. A swing can
be homemade using a wooden board attached to ropes that are suspended
from a tree branch.
Older children learn the knack of swinging their bodies high in a
"pumping" motion in which they learn to shift their body weight in order
to heighten their swinging movements. They may even swing as high as 15
feet above the ground.
Swinging on a porch swing can be a relaxing pasttime for older people as
they calmly swing back and forth in a type of rocking motion while
watching people and cars pass by from their front porch. this is a
relaxing activity for retired people on a clear spring or a crisp autumn
day or on a warm summer evening.
