Learning about the Jungle Gym
In 1920, the jungle gym was invented by a lawyer from Chicago whose name
was Sebastian Hinton.
The jungle gym is a climbing device that children have had fun on at
numerous playgrounds in parks and schools for years. It was
traditionally composed of metal pipe, but in recent years, it has also
been made of ropes from which children may swing, sit or climb.
Another name for the jungle gym is the monkey bars. It is known by this
other name because the actions of rambunctious children who climb on the
jungle gym are like that of monkeys. (This term is in no way
disrespectful of children, who have a playful nature while having fun
climbing their way around the jungle gym.)
The metal jungle gym is no longer common on playgrounds because many
children got injured when they hit their heads on the hard metal or when
their arms or legs became twisted around the bars, which caused sprains,
or even breaks to their limbs. In order to prevent, or at least
decrease, such injuries jungle gyms are now made of rope with wooden
platforms that contain ladders and railing around the outer edges.
There are many intricate designs of jungle gyms today, and many that you
can actually design yourself. They can be made to enhance the landscape
of your backyard; or designed to create a colorful and playful
environment for the school or day care playground. You can buy them
ready to assemble or create your own using specifications designed for
safety and fun. Whatever jungle gym you select, you can be sure that
your children will have hours of fun on it for years to come.
