Are
Modular Playgrounds Right for You?
Playground equipment has evolved in the
last couple of decades into a modular setting. School, park and backyard
playgrounds include play structures in which children can climb, swing,
slide and play. These structures are generally colorful units that fit
together to form many attractive shapes and designs.
There are several advantages with modular playground structures. One
distinct advantage is that you are able to customize the structures to
correlate with your children’s developmental needs and preferences. In
addition, the molded plastic pieces will not deteriorate or rust and
they can withstand a great deal of weight, in part due to the pipe/clamp
construction that is durable, as well as flexible.
The innovative modular structures contain many different configurations,
thus allowing for several different modes of play in just one unit.
These structures are built with safety in mind. The components fit
together securely and are built using secure links, clamps, posts and
other factory installed devices. Many of these units are custom designed
through the use of the computer to create plans for these unique play
structures. These structures are geared to certain age groups, including
preschool and elementary school age children.
Modular playground equipment for preschool age children includes smaller
climbing structures, as well as places for children to crawl around on
their hands and knees. The soft plastic which forms the playground
structures includes many handrails designed for little hands. Also
included are holes that both children and parents can look through for
maintaining contact at all times.
Older children's units will include more intricate structures designed
for better coordination and skill.
Modular play units are becoming increasingly popular for backyard play.
As a result, more units are being built which are cost effective and
useful in tight spaces or small backyards. Quality modular units that
are stable and secure can be purchased for backyard use, thus allowing
more children to enjoy these play units with friends, siblings or alone
(under the watchful eyes of parents).
These unique modular structures are generally positioned in areas where
nature is conserved such as in park settings or landscaped backyards or
school playgrounds. The benefits of climbing in, swinging, sliding and
overall playing is enhanced by the beauty of the great outdoors.
However, play structures may also be set up within indoor settings for
use in inclement weather. Thus, children are able to play even when the
weather is much too hot or too cold, or rainy or snowy.
