Keeping
your Swing Set Grounded
Out of all backyard swing sets sold in
the United States, only a small percentage of them are anchored
properly. I’m sure you have watched as children are swinging on a steel
swing set that becomes quite wobbly and unsteady the higher they swing.
You need a certain degree of mobility in a swing set in order to be able
to maneuver it when mowing the lawn and to prevent the grass from
wearing down in that area. However, precautions must certainly be taken
to ensure the safety of the children. One simple solution is to use a
water filled ballast that is attached to a swing set in order to prevent
it from tipping. This water filled ballast is a simple solution that
needs very little assembly and it can be attached to a swing set in just
a few minutes.
Water filled padding will prevent injuries due to the structure of the
swing, in addition to preventing the swing set from tipping. Padding
will prevent serious injuries if a child’s head or other body part
should come in contact with a steel swing leg.
You may also obtain a swing set that is stable, yet mobile which is
ideal when you need to mow the lawn in that area, and to prevent the
lawn from wearing down in that area. One such product that has these
features is the SwingSafe system.
When you purchase a swing set, follow the manufacturer’s instructions
and warning notices carefully regarding the anchoring of the swing set.
It is generally advisable to either cement the swing legs permanently to
the ground or provide metal anchors to fasten the swing set to the
ground. However, these two methods will prevent swing mobility, but they
will increase the safety for children who use the swing.
Cementing will be permanent, so you will probably need to hire the
services of a professional in that area. In addition, you will not be
able to take the swing set with you if you move.
Metal anchors are sturdy, but there are disadvantages to installing
them. The installation process may be difficult as well as time
consuming. They may also pose a risk to sprinkler systems. They can also
be dangerous for children who play around the swing due to the exposure
of the metal tops.
A swing set such as the SwingSafe system has many ideal features. It is
easy and quick to install and there are no tools needed; the swing is
mobile; it contains padding to prevent injuries; tipping is prevented
due to its construction; it will not harm the lawn; and it comes in a
variety of colors.
