Wood
Swings and Metal Swings
Years ago a family would not have a
choice in the materials used in backyard swing sets; they were always
metal. Nowadays, there are innovative swing sets in both metal and wood,
and either type will work well in your backyard. You should assess both
metal and wooden playground structures before selecting the structure
that is appropriate for your family's needs. Keep in mind that the main
objective is to provide a playground structure that is safe, as well as
fun, for your children.
Even today, most playground structures which are found in private
backyards are composed of metal and contain swing sets designed as metal
tubes which are attached with chains.
It is generally less expensive to purchase wooden playground equipment
than metal structures. Wood is especially a good choice if you are able
to design and build your own playground. Kits are available that will
instruct you as to how to combine various elements such as slides,
swings, climbing walls, etc. If your children are old enough, you can
ask for their input and preferences as well. There are many more options
for customizing wooden playground equipment than there are for their
metal counterparts. Wooden playground equipment has surpassed metal
equipment in recent years, primarily due to the options for customizing
the wooden structures.
Both wooden and metal structures need to be maintained properly in order
to prevent deterioration from weather-related elements. You will need to
apply the proper coatings for either wood or metal. Metal equipment must
be checked on a regular basis to make sure it doesn't rust. Wooden
equipment must be inspected routinely for possible splits or splinters.
